La pediculosis púbica también conocida como ladillas es un tipo de enfermedad de transmisión sexual es un tipo de infección del vello púbico causado por un tipo de piojo conocido Pthirus pubis o ladilla, esta enfermedad es similar a la que se produce en el cuero cabelludo cuando está infestado de piojos.
El piojo Pthirus pubis es un ectoparásito, esto significa que vive fuera de nuestro cuerpo, a diferencia de los endoparásitos como la tenia que vive dentro de nuestro intestino. Este piojo mide aproximadamente 1 mm de diámetro y tiene una estructura similar a la de un cangrejo, es translucido y no se ve fácilmente a simple vista, a menos que este se haya alimentado recientemente, entonces está lleno de sangre y es más fácil de ver.
Aunque este parásito es más típico de la región púbica también lo podemos encontrar en el vello de las axilas, la barba, las pestañas e incluso las cejas. Suelen vivir durante 4 semanas y ponen aproximadamente 30 huevos en ese espacio de tiempo, cada uno de estos huevos tarda aproximadamente 1 semana en eclosionar y dar lugar a otros piojos.
Las ladillas se consideran una enfermedad de transmisión sexual o ETS, ya que su transmisión se da cuando entran en contacto el vello púbico de una persona infectada con el de una persona sana durante las relaciones sexuales, esta infección al contrario que muchas otras ETS no se previene con el uso de un condón ya que este solo cubre la parte del pene. Esta enfermedad aunque no es muy común también se puede transmitir entre personas que comparten objetos como toallas, ropa de cama y ropa.
Ya que este parásito no salta solo se va a poder transmitir mediante el contacto directo entre las regiones púbicas de dos personas, además este tipo de parásitos no infectan a animales por lo que no son estos los brotes de transmisión.
